Just what are you waiting for? A sassy twist on the evolving middle-school friendship between Taryn and Jeff, the boy next door, told from their alternating points of view.
Taryn and Jeff have lived next door to each other their whole lives. It never really seemed to matter that they were a girl and a boy -- they were just friends. But when they hit sixth grade, everything changes. Sophie reluctantly agrees to be Kylie's partner at tryouts for their middle school cheerleading team. Attending practices without Kylie, Sophie initially feels like an outsider amidst the confident, popular and mostly petty other cheerleaders, but gradually gets sucked into their superficial social sphere.
He told her her glasses look good. She commented that she was wearing her hair down again and she asked if he liked it. He does, but he likes her hair in a ponytail too. It gave her butterflies. She recognized things were way different between them now. They went to go play a video game but her flip flop caught on the deck and she fell into him. It caused them both to fall down and it took a while to untangle and stand up.
He offered his hand to help her up and then held her hand longer than he had to. I was so disappointed with the ending. She said she couldn't crush on her friends, since they've known each other since they were in diapers. And she doesn't like boys "that way. An 11 year old most definitely likes guys. She felt butterflies again but I wanted so much more, tension and awkward moments, forcing them to see each other in a new way. It was totally lacking in everything I wanted and didn't live up to my expectations even halfway.
It left off with them not even together. I can't believe this played out this way. I'm so utterly disappointed.
The summary had me building up this relationship between guy and girl friends and that wasn't the case at all. Jeff was an immature jerk who doesn't know how to talk or treat girls, who only cared about soccer, who didn't like girls yet. Taryn was a mean girl who never learned a lesson, threw a carnival and got a big head, was known as a drama queen for overreacting, and who didn't like boys yet.
This had nothing to offer. And she never learned to treat Emma right. The author left off with Taryn and her friends being mean just 'cause, like it was just expected that girls are catty and mean to each to her for no reason and it's okay. I thought Emma would overhear the terrible things Taryn said about her and stop talking to her, and then Taryn would be left out and wish she had Emma to sit with on the bus and talk to.
She needed to regret being mean to Emma and want her friendship but not get it because she ruined it. I waited for Taryn's lesson. It never came. This sends a bad message to girls. That it's okay to talk badly about people; if you think too perfect then they deserve it. They shouldn't be so perfect because they're asking for it.
You should also put up with that jerk "friend" who constantly puts you down, makes fun of you, embarrasses you in front of other people, and forgets about you in favor of other people and other things, and pretends he doesn't know you in front of his new friends.
That's just how friends treat each other. This was about school changing and them changing with it, with a minute amount of a setup for a budding attraction that would take place in the future. Not the sweet book I couldn't wait to read, with best friends liking each other.
Jan 16, Stephanie rated it it was amazing. This is the cutest book ever!! I read this book when I was eleven or twelve. I loved it, and I read the other Candy Apple books. Sep 05, Virginia rated it really liked it. This book is really cute!!! I still remember the content clearly after I finished it several years ago.
Taryn and Jeff are just turning into teenagers or probably still not yet , and starts to develop the subtle feeling towards each other. Although it doesn't talk about them falling in love, I sti really like the relationship between them- friendship and maybe something more.
It is so cute when they tease each other. I would love to see a sequel about them in high school and actually starts dat This book is really cute!!!
I would love to see a sequel about them in high school and actually starts dating!!!!! Although I really like this book, it doesn't really fit in the young adult genre and probably is more suitable for junior high students. Nov 22, Houston Keanu rated it liked it Shelves: 10th-grade. This book switches points of view between Taryn and Jeff, two bestfriends ever since they can remember.
But when sixth grade starts things begin to change, will all these new changes tear them apart? Or will the expectations of them becoming closer than friends bring them together? I recommend this book to anyone, it's a good classic story. I don't recommend this book to people who would think of it as a tacky, cliche. Mar 01, Kenzie Blue rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorite-books.
It's pretty much a story about a girl and a boy who were friends every since they were teeny tiny children. Conflicts crop up when 6th grade comes around the corner. Misunderstandings happen and argument erupt. Through thick and thin, both Taryn and Jeff make up. Good thing they became good friends again.
But, for the record, Taryn does not have a crush on Jeff. She just enjoys the experiences of being with Jeff.
