Even the auto updates on that computer are beginning to insist on the admin password, which I have but the credentials file has been corrupted. End of story, unless you have something up your sleeve! TIA, Carls. At best you cannot guarantee a lot more is corrupt and not being able to do updates will leave it at risk of infection with malware.

At worst, it might be caused by already being infected with malware. Either way, I would be checking the HDDs condition which may also be why it corrupted via the HDD manufacturers tools and getting it wiped and reinstalled. If their tools require Windows you might need to do the latter first as no doubt they wil need admin rights.

Well I just did this work around and it seems to not be working very well. You can simply clean install, skip the key twice I think , and it will automatically be activated. Also, there are lots of threads out there on doing that, including the MS site.

If its not activated then the only way to fix that is to reinstall your previous Windows, get THAT activated and THEN follow these instructions or do the normal upgrade.
